Just a question about behavior!
Mom of Sam, just finished your book and was wonderful insight! Thank you! Do you know at any point would you mom consider writing a book from her perspective? Also, In your book you didn't go into much detail regarding mental health issues but did touch on them. Right now, this is one of our most difficult issues with our son. His is 7 years old and is on the maximum dose of zoloft for anxiety, OCD and the psychiatrist we are seeing has placed him on strattera in hopes to decrease his impulsive behaviors as well as his hyperactivity. He currently is on the minimum amount and they will titrate it slowly since he is extremely sensitive to medication adjustment. He still seems to have such cycles of mania to where his mind can't stop and repetative questions he has just can't come out of his mouth fast enough. As a parent I am scarred to death of what the future may bring. We have seen on of the most respected psychologist in the area since he was 3 and do behavior modification in conjuction with the medicaiton. We can have really good, what I call normal days at times but I want to know if we are on the right track since really no one here in Nebraska seems to "care" if the child had 22q or not although they do know not to treat with stimulants i.e. ritalin. The psychiatrist would was wanting us to see a pediatric behavior specialist but not sure if I want to get "another cook in the kitchen". I have tried to e-mail Children's hospital of Philadephia but no one will respond to me to get advise. Thank you for you time. It's much appreciated and thanks for the website Quinn!. I am one of 4 founders of Mission 22q--a non-profit foundation that we are just starting to develop here in Nebraska to build awareness and educated people regarding the 22q11deletion. I know Quinn is a busy man, but it would be a dream come true for him to come visit our small group some day when he has time. He has been and inspiration to me as a mom!! Our son Brady Q22 is now age 11. He has always asked repetitive questions and saw a phyciatrist for this and anxiety. The school counselor has been very helpful and keeps and open door policy with Brady. Is was explained to us that the question continues to circle in their brain until a blocker stops it.
We found these things helpful:
When anxious, ask him to write down what is bothering him and we can work on it later
We tell him to visually open up the trap door at the top of his head and let all the questions out into the air so he does not have to worry about them.
We and his teachers tell him we will answer his question one time and he has to write the it down or do what ever he needs to do, but WE WILL NOT answer it again. Tell him what You are going to do or not do, making him responsible for it.
Going on a field trip or somewhere new with school caused severe anxiety. If we took him there first and showed him how it would go, he could manage. Otherwise they let us be the shaparones.
We are catholic so Jesus comes in handy when we need a little prayer to give him strenth and courage. We give our problem up and know he is behind us supporting. We have really been able to reduce his symptoms to be more productive at this time. We have also found many things that help Brady with school, homework and working from an IEP with his teachers. It has been a challenge but I think we are finally seeing eye to eye. If you need any learning information to help getting from 7 to 11, let me know. Teresa.barnard.i3fg@statefarm.com
