Being Argumentative

One of my faults that I have noticed about myself is that I have a tendency to get very argumentative, but really only with my loved ones and family members. I think I get like that because I believe that when I see a family member in pain--and I feel like they are the ones putting themselves in the painful position--I should tell them what they should do. Generally, in the moment, I find myself telling them the opposite of what they probably want to hear; sometimes I even start to speak for them and tell them that they might say something all the time but they will never do it. That’s when my mom will tell me that I am being argumentive. I think I have learned that the more you care about somebody and the more you know they can do better for themselves, the more you can get argumentive. When I've been argumentative in the past, I haven't been able to see it. Now, I realize that in a way when you think you are helping them you may be in fact doing the opposite. If there were ever a college course on family, I think this would be family 101.
